I had my clutch replaced about a year ago at Lowson St, would have done it myself as I am a time served mechanic who taught most of Darlingtons mechanics in the 70 - mid 90s at the college and Teesside Transport Training. But due to a health problem I thought I'd leave it to them as a mechanic there has a Subaru.
3 days later got it back but engine warning light was on, after checking codes it turned out it was exhaust gas sensor problem but wasnt affecting running. Anyway due to health prob wasnt able to drive it so no problem.
1 yr down the line am driving the car again but needed to change a rear wheel bearing so decided while car was up in the air to do other stuff including the sensor. Slight problem!! Instead of removing sensor to remove exaust so gearbox could be removed, they cut the wires which are an integral part of sensor. £45 + for a new one with wires. On further investigation I was getting fumes in the car from gearbox oil leaking from the gearbox driveshaft oil seals which had been damaged when they replaced gearbox and driveshafts after fitting the clutch, the oil was dropping onto the exhaust junction, hence fumes of burning gearbox oil in the car. The exhaust only had 3 bolts holding it to the car instead of 6, three are missing.
So my scooby is now back to how it should have been done, PROPERLY.
If it hadnt been a year since I had it done, it would have gone back, but due to circumstances i havent found extent of probs til now.
I used to say to apprentices I trained "work on the cars as if they were your own, have a pride in the work and check it afterwards."
3 types of people get fleeced by cowboy garages, 1 single women on thier own, most just trust the garage. 2 Business people, sometime in suits, they wont get dirty n check job. 3 Pension age people, look as if they wont be able to do job or check if its been done, in this case that was me!!!! but now am able to do jobs again, car and Lowson St garage has been checked and caught out, I dont like cowboy garages and THIS IS ONE OF THEM. a Really shoddy half done job, leaving other careless, wilful and expensive bamage behind. WOULD DEFINITELY "NOT" RECOMMEND TO ANYONE.
