The platforms and the trains are beautifully kept. There is a carriage with a bar in the train and parties like birthdays, fish & chips lunches, etc. can be organised.
The journey from Ongar to Epping is not very long, I'd say 30 min for a return at a gentle pace.
At the train station, there is a bar in an old carriage with tables and seats, and a large uncovered terrace. You can also purchase snacks there.
There is of course a gift shop with the usual magnets and all the little souvenirs you can buy in this kind if place. It is accessible for wheelchairs, as well as the clean and modern toilets.
It wasn't very busy the day we went but it seems that the car park is quite large but no tarmac, low slung cars beware..
Some vintage bright red double decker bus can take you to Epping for a small cost.
Finally, the staff, mostly volunteers, dressed in genuine uniforms is very helpful and chatty. Some have an extensive knowledge of steamed trains and local railways which they enjoy to share.
This is a good place to bring children, but not too young as there is not much for them to run freely and you don't want to worry all day that something happens to them!
All in all, it is well worth a visit which should keep you busy for at least half a day.

Being a heritage station to interior, ticket office and platform very much harks back to yester year.
A good variety of locomotives and carriages to interest Diesel and Steam fans. My first visit was for the 60th Anniversary commemorative Class 37 diesel running day. The rolling stock is comfortable and with slam doors brings back lots of memories.
There is a collaboration with the London Bus Company which enables a swift and nostalgic shuttle ride from Epping Underground to North Weald. Having been here twice I rode on a Routemaster and also a Leyland National.
Dog friendly too which is a boon.
