The Iranian market located on the Dhow harbour at Mina port in Abu Dhabi is perhaps the oldest market in Abu dhabi before the mall culture sprung up.
It reflects the old tradition of business when products were imported from neihbouring countries by boats and sold in small shop lining the harbour. I believe mostly Iranians run these shops in the past and thus the market got its name. But today you will find products from all over being sold in the shops.
The shops are small single rooms lined up in series, more than 50 perhaps with their front side open to the land and the backdoor open to the sea.
They sell household items, kitchenware and appliances, gas burners, bathroom accessories, gardening appliances, nurseries, pots and vases, soil, bamboo, barbeque accessories, carpets, furniture and many other miscellaneous products useful in our day to day life. You name a thing and you get it in the Iranian market.
The kitchenware has utensils varying in sizes from the smallest suitable for a family of 2 upto huge sizes to cater to 200 people suitable for big public events.
They have earthen decoration items for your house and garden.
The nursery section is huge where you get all varieties of indoor and outdoor plants and trees, flowering plants, fruit bearing plants, decoration plants, bonsai, cactus varieties, vegetable plants and the list is endless.
Pots are available in various shapes and sizes as well as in different materials such as earthen pots, fibre, plastic, etc.
In the Iranian market, first time I came to know that there are different soil varieties for indoor and outdoor plants.
You get mango trees, banana trees, coconut trees, orange and lemon trees, moringa trees, almond trees, papaya trees and many more fruit trees for planting in the open air garden or farm.
This is perhaps one of the biggest place to get so many essential things at one place.
Since it is an open market, prices fluctuate from shop to shop. Besides, since the prices are not controlled, there are chances that you may end up paying more than outside. So bargain as hard as you can to get a good deal.
The Iranian market is a heritage place and every effort shall be made to conserve it amid the growing urbanisation.
