It's never going to put castles like Edinburgh or Dover out of business buts it's a lovely place to spend some time and have a wander. Really nicely presented, lots of info boards and great gardens that must be quite impressive when in season.

Free parking nearby is a bonus (plus a couple of disabled spots right outside) but might get busy at peak times.

Beautiful castle mostly ruins nice walk round Lovely area inside for children to sit and do a small activity grounds were clean and tidy gorgeous playground was awesome parking available to near by absolutely loved learning about the history! ????

A lovely spot. Very close to the town centre, EASY walk.
Visitor centre, refreshments and local history, dating back to 1070.
Well worth it if you are in the town.

A must visit Castle. One of the historically significant castles of England, "The gateway to the North." A bit knocked about by Oliver Cromwell, but you can see this would have been one of the most magnificent and well-built castles ever built. But the ruins are well worth a visit, and it's free. Car parking a short walk away. Great cafe and information centre and small gift shop. A must visit place.

Good day out with the family. Lovely play area. However, there is not a lot of signage to explain what everything is/used to be. The gift is shop quite small and very expensive. However, kids and the dog loved the open space, and there are some beautiful views.

A little local gem that is really well maintained with lovely gardens around the castle ruins. The children's playground is a great extra too...and it's all free!

Another amazing castle in Yorkshire. Free and well worth the time to visit.

It was a lovely day trip. Parking is fine, the walk around the ruins isn't long, but part of it is not accessible with a buggy, so take a baby carrier if you want to explore. The play park is amazing, so Definitely save an hour for this if you've got kids! Lots of picnic tables, so you can take your own food.
