Thimble Mill Pumping Station was part of the infrastructure of the Kennet & Avon Canal, designed to pump water up from the River Avon, replacing the water that was lost each time a boat went through the locks. The building was acquired by the Canal company in 1832 and a pump was installed, together with a second pump above Lock 11. But mill owners objected to water being taken from the river and eventually pumping was stopped. Thankfully the canal survived and is now an important amenity.
