I often buy books from your for-sale display. It seems like a good action by the library to return to the community, those books that are no longer of interest to lenders. Implied is an intention to offer a book that is of some benefit and use to the buyer and they receive something of value in return for the sum charged.

What I do not understand is why the books are purposely damaged before offering them for sale. Some books I bought in the last few days have the back cover of every paperback book cut through with a Stanley knife. There is a 4-inch slash in some cases.

It is very hard to understand how someone who works with books, with the purpose of transferring that knowledge to the readers, could bring themselves to cause damage to a book like this. It seems utterly opposite to the purpose of their job at the library.

Undoubtedly the damage will be explained by the need to deactivate the security label, so it does not sound when it is taken out through the library exit, but is it necessary to cause so much damage to the books?

When someone lends a library book, you make some change to the mangetic security label so it does not sound. Why not do this with the books you are selling, when you place them on the bookshelves, putting them on loan for a year or two. Then there is no need to slash the back cover and the book that you sell will be of greater value to the buyer, which must be a better exchange.

Can I ask you to review this wanton damage to these books?

Friendly librarians and lots of books to choose from. Staff are always happy to help. This library also has a self-service system which is a really nice touch.

I was a Reading Challenge volunteer this summer, and the staff couldn't have been more friendly, supportive or appreciative. They've created a welcoming, active and much-needed centre for all ages in East Grinstead. Hats off to them.
