A 14th century stone bridge that is still very much in use today - although single lane only. One of the main attractions of Chester - nice place to see the Dee river and watch the traffic from both directions patiently wait for each other to cross the bridge.

It is said, The Roman city walls were extended to the south in the 12th century with a wall bordering the north bank of the River Dee. The original Bridgegate is recorded to have been built by the 1120s. The gate guarded the southern entrance to the town and the North Wales Road ran through this gateway after crossing the Old Dee Bridge.

Historical bridge crossing the River Dee. Good views of this bridge can be seen from the city walls where a sign is also located.

Bridge gate is the southern gate of the city which leads to the old Dee bridge which crosses the river Dee. The gate and the bridge well worth a visit
