This man-made sea port was first opened in 1972 as a commercial port and was named after the late ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the founder of modern Dubai. It's large and is used for large container and general cargo ships with a dry dock for repairing supertankers and a ship repair complex. The passenger terminal was opened In 2010 and capable of servicing 4 cruise liners simultaneously.

Plans are currently in hand for major redevelopment of the port including a mixed use urban waterfront with extensive residential housing, shopping, cafes, restaurants and entertainment, and a marina capable of harbouring some 20,000 yachts.

Port Rashid Marina is also the home of the iconic QE2, the former Cunard Ocean Liner Queen Elizabeth 2. It arrived here in November 2008 at the end of her final voyage before being handed over to her new owners and converted into an upscale hotel.
