Macclesfield Bridge with iron columns & 3 Arches is a Grade II Listed structure located in the northern edge of leafy Regent’s Park. The Regent's Canal Towpath is very popular with walkers, joggers, runners, cyclists, pedestrians. Macclesfield Bridge can be observed on a boat or on foot! There are resting benches right next to the Bridge Columns on the Regent's Canal Towpath!

It is also known as Blow Up Bridge in reference to the 1874 explosion ???? which reduced the bridge to rubble - only the cast iron columns were relatively unaffected by the explosion! After this explosion, authorities brought in regulations on how to carry explosives on a boat!

The bridge was rebuilt using the same cast iron columns with a minor change - columns were swivelled round! As a result, rope grooves from boats navigating the Regent's Canal can be seen very clearly and remind the visitors of the historic past. The London Waterbus trip guide very eloquently provides the live commentary and will surely remind you of these grooves!

Site of the explosion of ‘Tilbury’ a barge carrying petroleum and gunpowder on 02/10/1874. The explosion killed the workers on the barge and destroyed the bridge, as well as many nearby houses. Debris was found over 500m away.

The bridge was rebuilt from the rubble but the pillars were reinstated the wrong way round. To this day the old towline marks from barges passing before 1874 can be seen on the pillars surface, but facing away from the water.

I like this place as it is quite, peaceful and relaxing. It seems I really in Venice. I walked from the entrance at little Venice and stopped at Camden dock. It's around 50 mins walk. The scene is excellent, makes me feel relaxed and cool in busy summer. People can have a long walk, do exercise or if your are visitors, you can also hire the boat and enjoy all the green plants on both sides. The only thing is the water is not so clean and clear, some places smell not good. Overall, it won't ruin your whole journey! I will recommend this place - a quite beautiful riverside scenes in central London!

Cool piece of history on the Regent’s Canal. The original bridge on this site was blown up by a passing barge (see the plaque photo for a full description). When the bridge was rebuilt the reused the columns and turned them around, so you can see the rope indentations from the towing in both sides of the columns. Think of all the barge traffic that would have been needed to create those on both sides! Thanks @Londonist for the history lesson.
