The excuse for a 'Post Office' in Darlington town centre is a disgrace.
Today, between 09.30 and 10.00, I visited with my wife who used a self-service machine to obtain a single First Class stamp (at an extortionate price), but after payment and issuing a receipt, there was no postage stamp.
My wife joined the queue to speak to the single assistant on duty at a cash desk. Not only did she know there was a faulty machine, but she also knew which didn't work.
'Oh, Number One, it's faulty,' she said cheerfully.
She then came around and slapped the machine (as folk did their radio or television in the fifties and sixties). The machine issued the stamp, to which the assistant responded,
'There you go.'
What kind of 'service' is that supposed to be at any level?
It would have been a good sketch on a comedy show, but it actually happened.
At the very least, would it be too much for the staff to be taught how to use a pen, piece of paper and sellotape to produce a temporary 'Out of Order' sign?
Probably, what angered us most was that we are both ex-Retail Managers who provided the best service possible in our separate careers so we understand 'Customer Service' and what it ought to mean.
I was hoping this review would publish without a star rating, because I couldn't locate the minus grades, but I had to select one to make it work.

Just what it is with this post office on Saturdays. They normally not the fastest with customer service, but Saturdays absolutely abysmal. I just watched second person has been setting up their work space for 20 mi s while queue of 10 people waiting. Is it a power trip or do they need better waking alarm? Maybe espresso machine to get them going? Always long wait here

Staff are all good at their job but most days they are run off their feet because there are not enough of them. Often long queues and a fair share of disgruntled customers. I'm a regular and it's really sad when the shop has more staff who aren't overworked.

Very disappointing. Made a special journey to this post office which, online, advertises that they offer the digital passport renewal check and send option. The whole point of this service is that they are supposed to use their expertise to take a photo of you, at the post office, so that your passport renewal application won’t be rejected by the passport office. Unfortunately, the gentleman behind the counter refused to take my photo as he’d decided that “the lighting conditions” weren’t acceptable! He told me to sort out my own photo at a passport photo booth somewhere else, which defeated the whole point of me being there in the first place! The Post Office advertise that this service exists at Darlington (inside the WH Smith shop) but, be warned, at least one member of the counter staff has decided to make up his own rules and not provide that service!

I went in the queue to pay my council tax and I have waiting 15 minutes to get served and they one have one who services they need more staff!

They're often shut when they're supposed to be open. They just put up a "due to unforeseen circumstances..." sign, but it's practically up every time I visit - so the circumstances probably aren't that unforseen! It's useless to have a service that you can't use. They also don't print out returns labels even when companies say they should be able to.

I had hoped that the service would improve once the main Post Office closed Called in yesterday at 15:40 to send a letter recorded delivery only to be told that it would go until today as the post had been bagged for that day and would be collected shortly. No signs to tell you the opening hours or what time the last acceptance of post is. If you don't want to provide a service don't bother let someone else operate it I'd score it zero but this system won't allow this.

queued for 20 minutes in the queue marked travel money and business queue here. When I got to the front of the queue I was told by John behind the desk he cant do travel money and I have come to wrong window. I said there is no one at that window so I have come to you as instructed by the sign. He told me it is not his fault I have come to the wrong place…

I followed the sign and waited patiently to be treated like a fool. The light was on in the travel money window. There was no closed sign and a sign instructing me to queue. I am absolutely horrified and disgusted by the way I was treated
