Having been to Stourbridge on numerous occasions i was aware of the facilities and general standard of play you get.
Travelling to a new ground in Midlands 4, playing a newly reformed team in Midlands 5, was one of excited trepidation.
As it turned out, this was one of the best trips me and Gavmeister have been on. 50 minutes on the train to Whitlocks End with a 5 minute walk to the ground couldnt of been easier. Nice little clubhouse, bbq area and 2 pitches bode well for the day. Various Committee members were delighted and shocked we.d travelled as far as we had to see their team in action.
As expected, and no disrespect intended, bodies of all shapes and sizes gradually turned up as kick off got ever nearer. For Gavmeister, the appearance of ham salad and cheese salad cobs was of more significance!!!
The game basically went in 3 stages...Birmingham and Solihull, The Bees, dominated the first 20 minutes, but Old Yards hung in there and after a misdemeanor by a Bees forward saw him earn 10 minutes in the sin bin, Old Yards took their chance.
From being 14-3 down, they rallied to lead 18-14 and it was game on.
It was then that match fitness, Bees back to 15 men and the introduction of 3 young Colts that swung the game back in favour of the away team who went on to win 40-18.
Difficult to judge but i.d expect Birmingham and Solihull to be strong contenders for Midland 5 honours while Old Yards will be worthy opponents for all in Midlands 4.
The fun was not over as an after match bbg saw both teams and supporters well fed by the hard working Pat and crew.
Once again Gavmeister,s eyes lit up as we were presented with 2 complimentary burgers for attending....many thanks.
We said our goodbye,s around 6-15 ish, train home, a couple of pints in the "Rot Ole" and a takeaway whilst belting out songs from Last Night of The Proms.
A superb day out and we will return
