Beautiful views, wonderful staff who care about their customer's happiness. Great portions, tasty tempura. Decent prices for lunch. Definitely recommended for a filling bite and a chill vibe in Gourock!

Just had a fantastic meal in The River tonight! The view was stunning and the food was amazing. Staff were very attentive and helpful. The gluten free options were great! Would highly recommend a visit. Also reasonably priced. Thanku! Will be back ????

The food was good and so were the drinks.

No complains about the staff or the food. In our opinion it was no worse or better than any other high street restaurant. Only difference is…they offer a nice selection of wine and cocktails.

No waiting time (perhaps when the restaurant is busy you may need to wait a bit before being seated).

Starters were magnificent, the views were tremendous and atmosphere too. However the wagu burger was dried out and zero flavour. Mussels were fresh and nice but unfortunately the burger at £15 was horrific and really tarnished a livley vibrant experience

Never again!! We ordered one decaf latte and one Americano. The latte was served cold and the waitress serving the Americano spilled a lot of it onto the saucer, but still served it in a mess anyway. The price of the decaf latte was not mentioned on the menu, it was £4.75! Yet the normal latte was £4.00 (strange to have a price difference, never seen this before). £4.75 is far too expensive for me cup of coffee not that large, especially since it wasn’t hot.
Also noticed that the staff cleaning the tables sprayed the cleaning solution everywhere which was spraying over the backs of customers, it’s not nice having so much chemicals sprayed next to you when drinking or eating. Far too overpriced and poor quality. Never again.

Had lunch today at The River in Gourock. Very disappointed with the whole experience. Firstly was shown to a table at the back while there was an empty table overlooking the river. I asked if the table was reserved but was told they were holding it just in case a large group came in. Eventually they agreed for us to sit there and move if the table was requested.
Secondly the food was overpriced and not great quality. My chicken slices had bones in it.
Overall very disappointed and I’ll not be returning.

Visited The River recently with a party of 4, with the restaurant being slightly busy but expected for a Saturday. Starters came out in a normal time, which were okay, but our plates were left for nearly an hour which is how long it took for our mains to arrive.

We understood it was busy, which we communicated to the waiting staff, but there was no attempt by the staff to apologise for the wait or to make us aware of when the food was coming. We only found out after a member of our table had to ask at the bar.

Food eventually arrived and can only be described as "fine". However, a member of our table ordered fish and chips with "mushy peas" which looked more like a dry, yellow chickpea terrine and it was inedible.

We wanted to leave soon after at this point, but after we asked for the bill, a bottle of prosecco (organised and arranged as a gift by a friend) was brought out. The staff apologised as this was meant to be out hours before, the request was that the bottle was on the table for arrival and this did not happen.

One of the members of my table communicated that she wouldn't be having any prosecco so the waitress offered to get her another drink instead. She ordered her drink and we went to pay the bill afterwards, which still took 20 mins and we had to approach the bar again. To sum up the shambolic night, we were then charged for the extra drink that was offered by the waitress. You'd think at this stage, after the terrible service and the fact they forgot to bring out the prosecco, they would have taken the drink off the menu - especially as the drink was offered as an alternative. The staff at the bar weren't willing to listen and we still had to pay at the end.

A frustrating and disappointing night, despite the fact we we communicated to the staff there that night that we understood they were understaffed.

The Good Brew part of the restaurant, which operates as a cafe/bistro downstairs has always been great but totally differs from The River upstairs. My second time visiting and it will be the last.

Don't recommend!
