In updating comments on Shillamill versus Porthkerry viaduct in the Vale of Glamorgan seen on various web pages, this structure is incorrectly described as an AQUEDUCT. It was in fact a double track railway viaduct constructed on a gentle curve and spanning the River Lumburn, south-west of Tavistock. Photographic evidence shows the curved structure and it had only 12 arches the trackbed being about 104½ft above the river.
The former BR Southern Region line between Meldon Quarry and Bere Alston was closed in 1968 and taken up, leaving the 12-arched Shillamill viaduct devoid of track and being declared a listed structure. If the proposed Plymouth to North Tavistock part-abandoned branch is reopened, Shillamill viaduct would be reinstated but with just a single track.

Excellent old railway viaduct, which has been closed and sealed off. The base which is constructed of concrete sections, designed to look like granite. The engineers distance marker, which marks that the viaduct is 215 miles from Waterloo.

Stunning historic railway path.... Following south from Tavistock. At the peak of summer the weeds, brambles and stinging nettles can be brutal... Butler there is just a path all the way to the start of the viaduct. Access onto the the viaduct is blocked.
Reverse back from the gate to find a path leading down and under the canal.
Fascinating history.

You can reach it by the canal path and view it above but it's closed off from both directions so you can't traverse it.
