Innerwick Castle is a hidden gem and worth visiting. Very hard to find since google maps doesn’t actually lead you to the entrance. The entrance is actually in the hamlet Crowhill. You’ll pass a sign that says Crowhill please drive slow on your left and in the next curve on the right, easily missed, is an old wooden sign to the entrance. Worth the trip, one of our favorite parts of Scotland!

An interesting place, but it's difficult to explore as the masonry is unsafe and badly overgrown, so it is quite difficult to get a feel for the building. Take care if visiting with kids or dogs as there are some steep drops.

Very dangerous as a lot of the brick work is crumbling. The path in was super steep & muddy. Not safe for dogs or kids. Not worth the time it took to find.

Innerwick Castle can be accessed by foot from the tiny hamlet of Crowhill ('Crawhill' locally known), just outside Innerwick the village. The walk begins by climbing over a stone wall using a wooden step, across a tiny burn using a wooden bridge and follow a single track path along, now and the, a steep slope. Old trees, ivy and fern hide much of the ruins, as you approach. As you clamber along the path the precariousness of the almost naturally fortified castle becomes evident. Steeply set below is Thornton Burn. The castle sits on the edge of the Glen, walls partly using natural stone cliff and foundation a sandstone cliff. The Castle we besieged several times over the next 2 centuries before it was lain to ruins in the mid 1500s. Since then weather has beaten the sandstone was over the centuries washed large parts of the stone leaving the remaining ruins standing on borrowed time.
Innerwick Castle was built in the 14th Century by the Royal Stewarts as part of their defence from Southern invaders. By 1398 it was passed on to the Hamilton Family once of Haddingtonshire and had been extended upon. Due to its ruinous state and weather corrosion it comes with a warning if being visited, that masonry is now dangerous. Although there is still much to see, court/doorway entrances, some rooms with roofs and windows are in reasonable conditions taking all things into account.
Great place to visit, but I'd not recommend taking young children or dogs, even teenagers I'd strongly suggest keeping a close eye on.
