We stumbled across this historic castle whilst on holiday. Lovely ruins and parts that you can still go in and look around. Beautiful grounds, take a picnic if it's nice weather!
Set in a lovely little village, well worth a look around. Tea shop just down the track, past the castle is amazing too. The day after we went they had a historic reenactment, which I'm led to believe is one of many events in the castle grounds during the year.
Free large carpark. Entry fee £6 adults. English heritage members free. Concessions I think were £5.50. Our toddler was free.

Beautiful English Heritage site (Medieval Norman Castle) in the heart of the breathtaking nature, in Norfolk.
It's a little bit hidden so it doesn't get particularly overwhelmed by the amount of visitors, therefore it can be a good choice to stop at for and hour or so.
It's completely free to visit with an English Heritage membership card.
I can recommend to families (especially with kids) and to people interested in history.

I was camping nearby, so decided to check out the local castle. It's a pretty good one. It's early. A Norman castle founded by Bishop Odo and built in stone in the 12th century. There is quite a lot of it to explore. A good staircase takes you up two floors. The floor of the Great hall collapsed a few hundred years ago but a walk way was cut into one of the walls via which you can visit the smaller rooms (including toilets) which serviced it. The font from the church which once stood in the grounds is now in the village church. It's worth a visit because of its Norman era decoration. The earthworks amongst which the castle stands are extremely impressive. There were several family groups in the castle while I was there and the kids were all enjoying themselves. It's very castley.

It’s a small castle near Kings Lynn. Park your vehicle in the parking area where you have the toilets (which are decently maintained). Get the tickets from the ticket office where you can get some goodies. Once you buy the tickets, you can explore the castle, ruins and surroundings!

Great place to visit. Amazing how they moved so much earth back in those days. There's not much there to do but a must if you are passing . You can send a couple of hours here to view the inside of it and walk along the edge of the keep. Free parking and entry if you're a member. If you are visiting the castle you must go into the village which is a few minutes walk away.

Castle ruins run by the English heritage. Plenty of parking spaces with toilets at the top of the car park. Visitors kiosk on the way in with a small shop and the place to pay/ show your EH pass. Dogs are allowed onsite. A few information boards around the ruins, explaining its history. You can go into the ruins. This is up some stairs. Not sure how less able bodied May find it. I sat outside with the dogs while my husband went up the stairs to see inside the building. There was a tearooms a bit further down the path, nearer to the village. It was signposted but we didn’t go into this. We spent roughly an hour looking around.

Wow! We decided to take a spontaneous trip out and wanted to visit a castle near us, quickly googled, and Castle Rising was one that popped up. 1.5 hours drive away.

Upon arriving, the castle was pretty well hidden inside the mound and so if you follow the signs you will get to it eventuallyfollowing the one way streets, and I guess the rain kept most people away, so the carpark was almost empty.

Thankfully for us the sky cleared just as we arrived which made for an epic reveal. We wondered around leisurely exploring every little hidden room we could find. It was truly a special find and we are so glad we stumbled across Castle Rising.

There are stairs but not too many to manage even for those who are not active or unfit. Toilets onsite are near the carpark.

For lunch we headed to the Black Horse, simple but really well made food, and cheap! So totally recommend!
