A personal memory. For years I have had an old vinyl record of the Cookham consort singing carols. The view of the church yard on the record sleeve is unchanged except today no snow.

A well maintained 11th century church in Cookham, Berkshire, adjacent to the Thames towpath. Historically linked for ever with the famous artist Stanley Spencer, who has a gallery in his name just around the corner. The church has on display a copy of his interpretation of the Last Supper, the original of which is usually displayed in the gallery. The church is normally open to visitors during the day and, although appearing dark and gloomy on first entering, your eyes get accustomed to the light, and there is uplifting which shows off the roof timbers to great effect.
It would appear to be quite an active church, running as it does, no less than four choirs, with two sung services each Sunday.
Among my photo's, there is one of a name carved into a pew in 1868. Vandalism isn't restricted to modern times!

My family and I briefly lived at Cookham (Westwood Green - 1962) and I attended services at this church with my Best Friend, Stephen Harvey, who also sang in the Boy's Choir at the church. I really miss those grand days at Cookham and being apart of that time period.

Beautiful old building in such peaceful surroundings. Visit in the evening when's it's quiet and follow your visit with a walk down by the river.
