Although you can’t see much from the road as you drive past. There’s actually a great story surrounding this area. In 2003, during the preparation for a road-widening scheme, an archaeological survey was carried out on this area. A 7th-century Anglo-Saxon chamber grave was discovered beneath a mound. The archeologists described it as "the most spectacular discovery of its kind made during the past 60 years".

In total, around 110 objects were lifted by conservators in two phases, over a period of ten days.

After the discovery of the Prittlewell tomb protestors campaigned for Southend Council to cancel the road widening scheme. This lead to a 4 year protest from locals known as Camp Bling and was infamous around Southend often gaining beeps of support from passing cars.

The Prittlewell tomb featured in a 2005 special episode of Channel 4's archaeological series Time Team, entitled "King of Bling", and devoted to Prittlewell.
