This was a brilliant discovery. I was walking upstream of the Thames Path enroute to Abingdon when I spied a glimpse of the bridge through the shrubbery and trees. Curious I decided to explore, and found that the bridge had a powerful and fantastic history. The bridge is not well maintained and quite hidden, but absolutely worth a side explore.

Culham Bridge is a mediaeval bridge crossing a present backwater of the River Thames in England at Culham, Oxfordshire, near the town of Abingdon. The bridge crosses Swift Ditch which was at one time the main navigation channel of the River Thames until Abingdon Lock was built in 1790. The bridge formerly carried the A415 road from Abingdon to Dorchester, Oxfordshire, but was superseded in 1928 by a modern road bridge.

Lovely little spot just outside Abingdon this bridge crosses the 'swift ditch' which is the original route of the river Thames. Originally the river came through here until it was diverted by the monks in Abingdon who wanted the passing trade. Now it crosses this small backwater and the old bridge lies parallel to the main road but is crossed only by a footpath.
