Marina Cruise with buffet dinner was a part of our day 1 itinerary by GT holidays. We had just arrived and there was not much to explore, a relaxing cruise through the Dubai Marina while finishing dinner seemed like a good thought.
The journey to the Marina was great with we spotting some interesting icons and super cars on the way. The check in to the cruise was a little chaotic, but we managed through our local focal from GT holidays who was on call for us throughout.
We were served complimentary carbonated soft drinks, after repeated asks by our neighbours by the window seat. Alcoholic drinks are on offer at an extra charge.
The delayed start of the cruise gave us a beautiful view of the Marina and the buildings around at a relaxed pace, unfortunately we had to overlook through our window seat neighbours to have a view, and decided to move outside and stand.
Shortly after the ambient music got a little louder and then we kick started the dinner buffet in batches. When my turn came, I stood by the line to pick up and I was told to hurry up. I had a little heated argument with the service staff on this. I liked the flavoured rice, chicken curry with the fish and chicken starters, the Arabic bread, salad and hummus was great too. But my family did not enjoy it much, the vegetarian options were good, wifey liked but not loved. Daughter was excited to see large fried prawns, but disliked them after the first bite, as the smell was off-putting, owing to the lack of freshness. I tried and I felt the same and stuck to chicken and fish.
Shortly after dinner, the entertainment for the evening started with a traditional Tanoura dance, it was fabulous to watch and the energy was high, the artist involved the audience to try out a few steps in his costume.
Then the dance floor was open with some Indian songs to which the crowd grooved to. We stepped out to get some fresh air waiting to get off the cruise and head back to the hotel.
Few things that I want to call out as feedback to both Unique Catamaran and GT Holidays
- A guided voiceover on the buildings around could have been an added plus.
- Like I mentioned, the quality of food was good, but the freshness of seafood is something that needs attention. My daughter disliked the prawns and refrained from eating anything else, and we ended up getting dinner later.
- There was no non-carbonated option in the welcome drink so my daughter did not get to have a drink.
- We could not get window seats inside and the outside seating wasn’t preferable. The cruise operators tried to accommodate but they couldn’t, neither could the intervention from GT holidays.
- We also got scammed by a mehendi artist who never mentioned the price upon asking, but charged us 150 dhms later, you learn through your bad experiences.
- The sad part is you are on a cruise and not on a hop on hop off bus, and can’t get off at will. We had to stick till the end, irrespective of our borderline irritation towards our experiences.
Overall the quality of the cruise, the service, and food seemed a little less than what we had anticipated, so it was a letdown on Day 1, but let’s see how the rest of the trip goes for us.
