Coriander – We Feed Souls’: Delicious Food. 5 Star Service.
Yesterday (Dec 28, 2021) my friend and I stumbled upon a new restaurant in Bur Dubai called 'Coriander-We Feed Souls' (opposite to Nesto Hypermarket). The name and the tagline got us curious, and we decided to check the place out and asked the person at the entrance if they serve Aaloo Paratha and Koki and they enthusiastically responded that they do.
As we entered, we were welcomed, warmly, by a lady who seemed to own the place. We proceeded upstairs, since the dining area was on the mezzanine, where we were greeted, once again in a very warm, friendly, and extremely professional manner, by a hostess. The dining area was well-lit and the interior was designed in 'brick-wall' theme, and decorated with soothingly bright hanging bulbs, giving it a 'desi' feel. The tables were short-legged like the traditional Japanese Chabudais, with half the tables using leather cushions for seating on the floor and the other half paired with short-legged wooden chairs. The ambience was quite welcoming and exciting on the whole.
As soon as we got seated, the biggest surprise in the form of a welcoming drink called ‘the heart of Coriander’. Who would’ve expected to get a welcome drink in a tiny restaurant in the heart of a marketplace like Bur Dubai, when most of the star hotels have discontinued this tradition? Coming back to the drink, it for sure tasted like it had lemon as the hero ingredient, along with salt, sugar and mint. However, upon enquiring with the hostess, we were told that the recipe is a secret and intended to keep it that way. The drink was fantastic anyway.
We went ahead with the order and asked for an Aaloo Paratha and a Koki. We received our order within 7 minutes of placing it. The paratha came first which was topped with a generous serving of butter on top and with a bowl of yoghurt with some mild spices. We didn’t wait for our other order to arrive, and we dove straight into the paratha since it was too tempting to keep it waiting. It was good but not the best of the parathas we’ve had. However, it was both tasty and appetising. I felt the base of the paratha could’ve been a bit thinner, which could’ve enhanced the experience.
Meanwhile, our hostess dropped by our table seeking feedback on the paratha and I gave my honest comments. Within no time, one of their kitchen staff visited us and apologised for the paratha not being up to the mark and offered to replace it. We were just happy that they took our feedback seriously and politely, turned down the offer.
Next came the Koki. They served us two mini Kokis instead of one big piece of bread. The entire Koki was crispy and had the same consistency, and when I popped it into the mouth, it was equally soft and instantly dissolved in my system. I couldn’t stop myself from having a go at the Koki from thereon, while trying to fight this distracting question “How on earth could one make something so crispy and yet so soft?”
Between our paratha and the koki, we requested for some fried green chillies, and they seemed to have attained perfection on that as well. It was the freshest fried green chillies I’ve ever tasted with the perfect balance of salt and chat masala, without the chillies being over-fried. My friend and I were commenting to each other that this place does ‘feed the souls’; it was proven beyond doubt.
While enjoying our meal, we had overheard some guests ordering for the Ahmedabad Special Chai and we thought of trying it out too. And unsurprisingly, this also turned out to be a great decision. The chai was a perfect blend of aromatic spices, strength of tea and the creaminess of the milk. It truly complemented and completed the entire dining experience at ‘Coriander’.
The bill: Aalo Paratha (AED. 7); Koki (AED. 7); 2 cutting Ahmedabad Special Tea (AED. 1.5 each); Total Bill: AED. 17 for 2 people.
My verdict for ‘Coriander – We Feed Souls’: “Delicious Food. 5 Star Service.”
We were served by: Ms. Tisha Khanderia (Owner); Ms. Shivani Bharti (Hostess).
